History and Role of Cooperatives as an Institutional Innovation

Jörg Migende, BayWa AG

Head of Corporate Public Affairs and Digital Farming, Lead Expert Agribusiness; designated CEO of Deutscher Raiffeisenverband DRV e.V.

Created as an important institutional innovation in the mid-19th century by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, cooperatives play a leading role in the agri-food system of Germany today. Being owned by family farms, cooperatives serve as an interesting role model of farmers’ empowerment worldwide. What are their main principles? What made this innovative form of organization in the agri-food system so successful? How have the Raiffeisen cooperatives changed over time? And how will they be able to compete against the increasing market power of corporations in the future? In this public lecture, Jörg Migende will discuss these topics and answer your questions.

Jörg Migende is currently Head of Corporate Public Affairs and Digital Farming and Lead Expert Agribusiness at BayWa. From 2024 onwards, he will be the CEO of the German Raiffeisen Federation (Deutscher Raiffeisenverband DRV), the umbrella organizations of cooperatives in the German agri-food system.
