Plant-based analogs of meat products promise to play an important role for the sustainability transformation of food systems both in the Global North and the Global South. But what do we know about the environmental benefits of plant-based meat analogs? On what factors do these benefits depend? And to what extent do plant-based analogs actually mimic the nutrient content of animal-sourced food? Can we expect a large-scale uptake of plant-based meat in the future? In this public lecture, Professor Pingali will discuss these questions from a global food systems perspective. He will draw on his recent comprehensive literature review on the topic and on insights from his extensive research on food systems transformations.

Prabhu Pingali is professor of applied economics in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He is also the Founding Director of the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition. He has over four decades of experience working with some of the leading international agricultural development organizations as a research economist, development practitioner and senior manager. He has written 14 books and over 200 refereed journal articles and book chapters on food policy. His work has been cited approximately 30,000 times in the academic literature and has influenced national food and agricultural policy and donor funding of several developing nations, including India.

Do not miss this unique opportunity to meet a leading agricultural economist and food systems specialist!

The lecture is organized by Prof. Dr. Regina Birner, Hans-Ruthenberg Institute, Division of Social and Institutional Change in Agricultural Development.
