Prof. Dr. Regina Birner

Regina Birner is Chair of Social and Institutional Change in Agricultural Development at the University of Hohenheim, Germany.  Her research focuses on policies, governance and institutions that are essential for global food security and agricultural development. Gender is a cross-cutting concern of her research. She has more than 25 years of empirical research experience on smallholder farming systems in Africa, Asia and Latin America and has published widely in this field. Her latest research deals with digital innovations in agriculture. Regina Birner is the Co-Speaker of the “Future Commission on Agriculture” and a member of the Advisory Council on Agricultural Policy of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). From 2012 to 2023, she was a member of the Advisory Council on Bioeconomy of the German Federal Government. She is also advising international organizations, including the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Regina Birner holds a postdoctoral degree (“Habilitation”) in Agricultural Economics and a PhD in Socio-Economics of Agricultural Development, both from the University of Göttingen, Germany. She received her M.Sc. degree in Agricultural Sciences from the Technische Universität München-Weihenstephan, Germany.
