Two members of our chair were awarded prestigious awards by the foundation fiat panis.

Two members of our chair were awarded prestigious awards by the foundation fiat panis. Dr. Thomas Daum was awarded the Josef G. Knoll European Science Award, which honours “outstanding work” from “young academics whose research focuses on solutions to mitigate hunger” and is endowed with 10,000 Euro. Dr. Daum received the prize for his work on “the potential of smartphone apps to collect self-recorded data in agricultural households”, which was supervised by Prof. Dr. Regina Birner. According to the jury, his app “allows more precise recording of time use and food consumption behaviour among poor rural populations” and “can make a significant contribution to improving databases for research and policymaking, thus being of highest relevance for farmers’ livelihoods and their food security”.

Roberto Villalba, received the Hans Hartwig Ruthenberg-Graduate Award, which honours excellent master theses in the field of food security and poverty alleviation and is endowed with 2,500 Euro. Mr. Villalba has received the award for his master this on the ‘Uberization’ of agricultural mechanization services: The case of EM3 Agri Services in Rajasthan, India”, which was supervised by Prof. Dr. Regina Birner and Dr. Thomas Daum. According to the jury, he showed with his “excellent analysis that access to digital services enables farmers to increase labour productivity, income and food security in India”.
